Privacy practices, patient's rights & responsibilities

Casper Surgical Center is committed to protecting medical information about you. When you check in for surgery, you will receive our privacy practice. It will tell you about the ways we may use and disclose medical information about you. We also describe your rights and certain obligations we have regarding the use and disclosure of medical information.

A copy of our Privacy Practices, Patients Right and Responsibilities will be given to you during your pre-op visit with your surgeon. When you check in for surgery, you will be offered this information if not given to you during your pre-op visit.

Patient Rights

It is recognized that each patient at the Casper Surgical Center has the following rights:

  • Be treated with respect, consideration and dignity.
  • Be informed of his/her rights and to be involved in any restrictions of those rights.
  • Be given respectful, considerate, courteous care by competent personnel with consideration of his/her privacy concerning his/her medical care with spiritual and emotional support.
  • Be given the name of his/her attending physician, the names of all other physicians directly assisting in his/her care, and the names and functions of other health care persons having direct contact with the patient.
  • Have records pertaining to his/her medical care treated as confidential.
  • Be informed of surgery center rules and regulations applicable to conduct as a patient.
  • Absence of clinically unnecessary diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
  • Expedient and professional transfer to another facility when medically necessary and to have the responsible person and the facility that the patient is transferred to notified prior to transfer.
  • Treatment that is consistent with clinical impression or working diagnosis.
  • Good quality care and high professional standards that are continually maintained and reviewed.
  • Full information in layman's terms concerning appropriate and timely diagnosis, treatment and preventive measures; if it is not medically advisable to provide this information to the patient, the information shall be given to the responsible person on his/her behalf.
  • Accessible and available health services; information on after-hour and emergency care.
  • Have all my questions answered regarding my surgery by the physician prior to the start of a procedure (informed consent).
  • Receive appropriate and timely follow-up information of abnormal findings and tests.
  • Receive appropriate and timely referrals and consultation.
  • Receive information regarding "continuity of care." To be given personal and informational privacy within the law.
  • Refuse drugs or procedures and have a physician explain the medical consequences of the drugs or procedures.
  • To have pain and discomfort treated appropriately.
  • To have personal belongings safeguarded and returned upon discharge.
  • To be provided medical and nursing services without discrimination based upon age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, handicap, disability, or source of payment.
  • Have access to an interpreter whenever possible.
  • If minors, the same consideration is provided as to any other patient, in addition to having their parents or legal guardians involved in every aspect of their care.
  • To receive an explanation of your surgical bill.
  • Receive information regarding methods of expressing suggestions or grievances to the organization.
  • To have concerns addressed by appropriate Center personnel, state regulating agencies, the protection and advocacy network and the Medicare fraud control unit.

Patient responsibilities

Each patient treated at this facility has the responsibility to:

  • Provide full cooperation with regard to instructions given by his/her surgeon, anesthesiologist and operative care (pre and post).
  • Provide the surgery center staff with all medical information which may have a direct effect on the provider at the surgery center. This includes but is not limited to: present complaints, past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications and other matters relating to your health.
  • Inform the Center staff of any unexpected changes in your condition.
  • Ask questions or request clarification about what you have been told in order to fully understand what is expected of you.
  • Follow instructions and treatment plans. Positive results require that you and your family cooperate with Center staff and your physician.
  • Express concerns about your ability to follow the proposed course of treatment that you and your family physician have developed.
  • Follow the Center rules and regulations concerning your care and conduct. Respect the rights of other patients and Center staff. All medical information must be considered confidential.
  • Be respectful and considerate of other patients and Center personnel. This includes no smoking, unnecessary noise or distractions.
  • Make sure you understand instructions, including medication schedules and follow-up appointments before leaving the Center.
  • Provide the surgery center with all information regarding third-party insurance coverage.
  • Fulfill financial responsibility for all services received as pre-determined with the Business Office prior to the day of surgery. It is your responsibility to assure that the financial obligation for your healthcare is met promptly. Financial counseling is available.
